License a Pet

All dogs 4 months and older in the City of Irvine are required to have and wear a current license tag. (Cat licenses are recommended but not required by law.) Your pet's license is proof of its valid rabies vaccination, as well as its best chance to get safely home if it is lost.

To purchase a license, you must provide proof of your pet's current rabies vaccination. Please note: Licenses are valid for up to three years of purchase but not beyond the rabies vaccination expiration. If your pet has been spayed or neutered (and we hope it has), you may license it at a reduced rate by providing proof of alteration. Pet owners older than 62 may license their pets at a reduced rate by providing proof of their age. Pet owners with a permanent disability may license their pets at a reduced rate by providing proof of disability either in-person or by mail. Click here for proof of disability requirements. Disabled-rate licensing for new licenses and renewals are not available through the online portal.

Licensing your pet is as easy as 1, 2, or 3:

  1. Apply at one of our participating vet offices (see below).
  2. Apply online by clicking on the Pet Registration Online below.
  3. Apply in person at the Irvine Animal Care Center.
