Construction & Demolition Recycling
What are Construction & Demolition Materials?
• Brick • Drywall • Other Masonry • Cardboard • Green Waste
• Paper • Carpet • Lumber • Plastic • Concrete • Metals
These materials can be easily recycled and turned into other products.
EXCEPTION FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS: some items may contain toxins such as asbestos, lead, etc., in which case proper handling and disposal is required.
What are the Requirements for C & D Materials?
In 2007, the City of Irvine adopted a Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris Recycling and Reuse Ordinance (07-18). Under this ordinance construction development, renovation, and demolition projects are required to recycle or reuse most of the debris generated by the project, at levels consistent with the California Green Building Standards Code.
Does the New Ordinance Apply to my Project?
To ensure consistency with the new California Green-Building Code, with few exceptions, Chapter 10 of Section 6, Division 7 of the Irvine Municipal Code — the City’s Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris Recycling and Reuse Ordinance (07-18) — requires construction development, renovation, and demolition projects to complete waste management plans (WMPs).
Which Hauler can be used for my Project?
The City of Irvine has a list of authorized franchise waste haulers that can provide waste bin service for collection of construction and demolition solid waste. Contractors are required to choose waste bin service haulers from the approved list. Click here for the complete list of approved haulers and contact phone numbers.
What Facilities Accept C & D Debris for Recycling?
There are 31 recycling and diversion facilities located near Irvine, where contractors can take source-separated materials. Click here for a complete list of facilities, addresses and accepted materials.
Landfill Fee Increase!
To discourage landfill use and encourage greater recycling, the County of Orange has increased public landfill fees as follows:
- Large Trucks (over 800-pound load) - $60.09 to $65.09 per ton of waste disposed.
Small pick-up-trucks (less than 880-pound load) - $20.00 per load.
You can avoid this fee increase by recycling more and taking your waste and recyclables to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) or other recycling facility instead of the landfill.
