What happens with unclaimed property?

Per CA Civil Code 2080.4 - 2080.6, unclaimed property can be disposed of or auctioned.

Found property & Found property of value (held for 90 days):

CA Civil Codes 2080.1 & 2080.3 require the finder of lost property if the owner is unknown, to turn the property over to the police department. If the reported value of the property is $250.00 or more and no owner appears and proves ownership of the property within 90 days, a notice of the property needs to be published at least once in a newspaper of general circulation.  If, after seven days following the publication, no owner appears and proves ownership, the individual who found the property can claim title to it.

Property held for safekeeping (held for 60 days):

CA Civil Code 2080.10 details the process of personal property held for temporary safekeeping on behalf of an owner.
