Heritage Community Park Improvements Master Plan

Project Background

Heritage Community Park is centrally located in Irvine’s El Camino Real neighborhood. It is bordered by Irvine High School, Interstate 5, Yale Avenue, and Walnut Avenue. The William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center is located to the west of the park on Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) property. Given the District’s mutual interests and adjacencies, joint use agreements exist for shared use of recreation amenities. (Click on the image below for a high-resolution view).

Heritage Community Park is in need of rehabilitation due to its aged facilities and changing community needs. The park initially opened in the late 1970s, and the majority of its facilities were constructed between 1978 and 1988. For these reasons, the City’s Parks Master Plan (approved in June 2017) identified Heritage Community Park as a priority candidate for renovation, as it is a primary service and recreation provider within the City of Irvine.

The park includes a variety of elements and features, including:

  • Heritage Park Community Center, which supports after-school programs, community rentals, early childhood education, high school and middle school Youth Action Team (YAT) programs, camps, and contract classes;
  • Irvine Fine Arts Center, which hosts art classes, open studio programs, events, and exhibitions;
  • Child Resource Center, which facilitates child care, the Irvine Community Nursery School, child development resources, and a lending library;
  • Orange County Public Library;
  • Pond and adjacent picnic areas surrounded by concrete walkways, a gazebo, and picnic tables;
  • Playground, which features an ocean-themed play structure with an adjacent splash pad water fountain;
  • Sports fields, which support soccer, baseball/softball, and football; and
  • Sports courts, including three lighted basketball courts, 12 lighted tennis courts, two lighted racquetball/handball courts, and a sand volleyball court.
