The City of Irvine takes great pride in its diverse community and continues to set the standard for taking proactive measures to maintaining a quality of life that includes safety and inclusion for residents, businesses, and visitors.
In early 2021, Mayor Farrah N. Khan and City Councilmembers unanimously adopted the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Resolution and launched a diversity campaign, We Are Irvine. In light of recent hate crimes and incidents toward the Asian Pacific Islander community throughout the United States and Irvine, the City has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its residents from hate and discrimination with the launch of a new multilingual hate crime reporting portal through the Irvine Police Department (IPD).
This afternoon, Irvine Mayor Farrah N. Khan, Vice Mayor Tammy Kim, and Councilmembers Anthony Kuo and Mike Carroll joined local nonprofit representatives, Asian American advocates, and community members to speak out against the Asian Pacific Islander hate incidents and crimes happening across the country.
“I am strongly committed to upholding the ideals of the City of Irvine,” said Mayor Farrah N. Khan. “This includes the celebration of our community’s diversity and continued strong messaging that there is no room for hate in Irvine. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiative, the We Are Irvine campaign, and the hate crime reporting portal are just the beginning of this City Council’s cognizant efforts to preserve and cultivate these standards.”
City leadership is committed to maintaining Irvine’s quality of life for all, and will not tolerate discrimination and hate. As such, a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity committee was formed to evaluate and advise the City Council on Irvine business, community affairs, policies, hiring practices, and culture. Furthermore, Mayor Farrah N. Khan placed a Resolution on the March 9 City Council agenda for the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
