Creating a Climate Moonshot Strategy for Irvine

Cool City Challenge: A Call to Action
Scientists tell us we must achieve by 2030 what humanity is trying to accomplish by 2050 to avoid irreversible ecological tipping points. As such, the City of Irvine has set a goal of reaching carbon neutrality by this ambitious deadline. Business as usual climate solutions are not up to the task. We need a climate moonshot strategy — an ambitious, exploratory, and ground-breaking approach to reach community-wide and inclusive sustainability.

The Cool City Challenge invites cities to become early adopters and embark on the ultimate mission of our time: becoming a carbon neutral city by 2030.

The City of Irvine is issuing a call for volunteers as part of our participation in the Cool City Challenge. To secure $1M in grant funding and technical assistance for our climate efforts, we are seeking community members to volunteer as Cool Block leaders that will work with a team to host sustainability workshops in 2022. If you are looking for a way to make a meaningful impact on climate change, this is your chance.

The City of Irvine seeks to register 200 volunteers who are interested and committed to climate action in Irvine by September 20. You can contact EnvironmentalPrograms@cityofirvine.org with any questions, or to volunteer.

While this is a possibility, the magnitude and speed of change is challenging. A public-private-civic partnership is necessary to provide the collective intelligence to crack the code on the technical, political, financial, and community integration required to become a carbon neutral city.

Drawing from President Kennedy’s inspiring directive, the City of Irvine chooses to pursue the carbon neutrality journey and complete the Cool City Challenge:

“…not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win…”

Please visit Cool City Challenge for more information about the program. If you are interested in volunteering for this opportunity, please reach out to EnvironmentalPrograms@cityofirvine.org.
