Divisions, Bureaus & Units

The Irvine Police Department is comprised of six (6) distinct Divisions which operate under the direction and management of the Chief of Police. Each Division contains unique and specialized Bureaus, Units, and Sections responsible for overseeing and maintaining the programs of the Department.

Administration Division

The Administration Division, under the direct command of the Chief of Police and managed by Police Lieutenants, is responsible for overseeing the Department's policies and procedures, providing the internal and external communication regarding Department matters and events, and directing the goals and mission of the Department to the other Department Divisions.

The Administration Division is comprised of:

  • The Office of the Chief of Police
  • Public Information Officer
  • Support Services

Business Services Division

The Business Services Division provides the civilian support services of the Department. The Division is managed by the Business Services Manager and under the command of the Chief of Police.

The Business Services Division is comprised of:

  • Budget / Grant Office
  • Communications Bureau (9-1-1 Dispatch)
  • Technology Support Unit
  • Regulatory Affairs Unit
  • Technical Services Unit
  • Property Unit
  • Custody

Operation Division

The Operations Division has the largest complement of sworn police officers in the Department. The Division is commanded by the Deputy Chief of Police and has three (3) Area Commanders who manage the geographic sections, Police Lieutenants who oversee their individual bureaus, and Police Sergeants who supervise the individual units and sections

Operation Support Division

The Operations Support Division is responsible for overseeing the programs that support the Patrol and Investigations Bureau of the Department. The Division is commanded by the Deputy Chief of Police, managed by Police Lieutenants who oversee their individual bureaus, and Police Sergeants who supervise the individual units, sections and programs.

Office of Professional Standards

The Office of Professional Standards handles the human resources / risk management of the Department. The Office is managed by a Police Lieutenant and is under the command of the Chief of Police.

The Office of Professional Standards is comprised of:

  • Internal Affairs
  • Risk Management
  • Worker's Compensation

Office of Professional Development

The Office of Professional Development is responsible for the hiring and training of Department personnel, act as a Department liaison to the police academies, and manage the personnel and training files of Department employees. The Office of Professional Development is managed by a Police Lieutenant and is under the command of the Deputy Chief of Police.

The Office of Professional Development is comprised of:

  • Academy and POST Training Section
  • Firearms and Range Section
  • Recruitment, Personnel, and Hiring Section
