Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Honoring Irvine’s Indigenous People to Be Held at Portola Springs Community Park

Tuesday, September 12, 2023

The City of Irvine invites the community to the Portola Springs Sentinel Ribbon Cutting ceremony Thursday, September 14, 3:30–4:15 p.m. at Portola Springs Community Park. The event includes a cultural activity that honors the indigenous people of the ‘U∫rónvanga area (now, Portola Springs) with a formal dedication to follow.

The three new sentinel signs offer insight into the life of the Acjachemen people who occupied the area for nearly 10,000 years. ‘U∫rónvanga in particular was a busy village, tool-manufacturing site, and considered a sacred area to the Acjachemen. The installation of the signs is in addition to the existing Native American wing at the Portola Springs Community Center and represents the City’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and recognition of Irvine’s indigenous people.

Portola Springs Community Park is located 900 Tomato Springs in Irvine. For more information, call 949-724-7462. Visit cityofirvine.org/portolasprings to learn more about Portola Springs Community Park.
