The City of Irvine will celebrate 20 years of protecting and preserving Irvine’s open space at Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The milestone 1988 Open Space Initiative preserves Irvine’s natural splendor through the protection of parks, trails and wilderness areas. This free, public event will include entertainment, barbeque, nature hikes, and exhibits.

The City of Irvine is holding a special Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 26 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park, to commemorate the men and women who have given their lives in defense of our nation and the ideals we cherish. Join us in memorializing their noble sacrifice by honoring a family member or friend who has died in the line of duty by writing down a brief remembrance to be posted on a memory board at the event.

At their meeting of February 26, 2008, the City Council unanimously called a Special Election to place Measure H on the June 3, 2008 Statewide Primary ballot.

The City of Irvine is accepting applications for appointive positions to the Green Ribbon Environmental Committee. This is an advisory committee which will consist of 7 voting members; appointed members will be charged with making recommendations to the City Council on matters related to climate protection, energy, recycling and waste management, sustainability, transportation and water issues.

CERT is a group of people organized as a neighborhood-based team that receives special training to enhance their ability to recognize, respond to, and recover from a major emergency or disaster situation. Teams are trained by professional responders in areas that will help them take care of themselves and others before, during and after a major emergency. The Irvine Police Department is currently accepting applications for its late spring CERT 18 class beginning May 20.

Campaign Aims to Boost Seat Belt Use The Irvine Police Department will be aggressively enforcing the state’s occupant protection laws as part of California’s 2008 Click It or Ticket mobilization, taking place May 12-June 1. The campaign relies on heavy enforcement and public education as a means to help California achieve the highest seat belt use rate in the nation.

More than 60 community partners from the Irvine Prevention Coalition will join together on Saturday, May 17, 2008 to show their support of local public safety, and health and wellness organizations. The annual Irvine Family Fun Fair starts at 9 a.m. with the Fair continuing until 1 p.m. at the Irvine Civic Center.
