California Statewide Mask Requirement for Public Spaces Extended Through February 15

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced today, January 5, 2022 that the statewide mask mandate for indoor public spaces which went into effect Wednesday, December 15, requiring anyone that enters a public space to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status will be extended through February 15. The mandate supersedes all prior face coverings guidance.

The City of Irvine’s Executive Order, remains in place and falls in line with the current guidelines issued by the California Department of Public Health. These guidelines are to be followed by all residents and businesses in Irvine until February 15:

  • In indoor settings outside of one's home, including public transportation, face coverings are required regardless of vaccination status.
  • For fully vaccinated persons, face coverings are not required outdoors except when attending crowded outdoor events, such as live performances, parades, fairs, festivals, sports events, or other similar settings.
  • For unvaccinated persons, face coverings are required outdoors any time physical distancing cannot be maintained, including when attending crowded outdoor events, such as live performances, parades, fairs, festivals, sports events, or other similar settings.

After January 15, 2022, the state will make further recommendations as needed in response to the pandemic. Additionally, CDPH updated requirements for attending mega events, like concerts and sporting events. Prior to attending an event, attendees will now require either proof of vaccination, a negative antigen COVID-19 test within one day of the event, or a negative PCR test within two days of the event.
