City of Irvine to Launch Mask Giveaway to Fight COVID-19

The City of Irvine will distribute face masks received through the recent generous donation from FivePoint Holdings, LLC to community members in an effort to stem the tide of COVID-19 and safeguard Irvine residents and workers including first responders.

The disposable face masks will be provided to the community as part of the City’s overall COVID-19 response efforts, beginning with the Mayor’s Mask Giveaway. This drive-up distribution event on Saturday, August 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Irvine Civic Center, will provide each car with one free box of 50 disposable masks.

“Since this crisis began, the health and safety of our community has been our top priority,” Irvine Mayor Christina Shea said. “We were one of the first cities to require face coverings. We distributed masks to essential businesses early on in the pandemic. We are the first City in Orange County to establish a COVID-19 testing program for those who live and work in our community regardless of whether they are experiencing symptoms. And now, thanks to this generous donation from our partner FivePoint, we have the opportunity to provide masks to residents, families, workers, and first responders. We extend our deepest appreciation to FivePoint for their dedication to the Irvine community and continued collaboration.”

On July 30, the City donated 100,000 masks to the Irvine Unified School District in an effort to protect our school-aged children, along with IUSD staff and faculty, upon their return to school for in-person learning.

As part of the City’s continued effort to help the community deliver critically important care and services as safely as possible, a portion of the masks will also be distributed to the Tustin Unified School District, child care sites through the Irvine Child Care Project, and City summer camps.

In addition, masks will be given to the most vulnerable in our community - Irvine seniors - through the Meals on Wheels and congregate lunch programs and through assisted living facilities.

Masks will also be available for businesses and for Irvine first responders. Businesses in need of masks, please visit cityofirvine.org/facemasks.

FivePoint donated the masks to the City on July 27 as part of its continued commitment to securing much-needed resources for the community in the midst of this global medical emergency. In the initial days of the statewide lockdown in March, FivePoint was among the first companies locally to acquire more than 100,000 face masks for healthcare workers, law enforcement personnel, and others.

The City of Irvine issued an Executive Order on April 10 requiring face masks for our community and businesses. Since that time, City leadership and staff have worked diligently to donate PPE supplies to residents and businesses in need.
