Mayor Christina L. Shea delivered her State of the City Address on February 25 to a capacity crowd in the Irvine City Hall Council Chamber. Topics included sustainability, public safety, fiscal strength, and development at the Orange County Great Park.

In her address, Mayor Shea announced that the City received an award for sustainability from the California Environmental Protection Agency on February 20. The award recognized Irvine’s organic landscape policy, which reduces the use of synthetic pesticides on City property, and includes the use of goats for weed abatement and fire mitigation. Community members had a chance to learn more about the use of goats in the community during a grazing goats educational and interactive experience in the Irvine Civic Center piazza prior to the State of the City Address.

Mayor Shea also reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring a final resting place for veterans in the Orange County Great Park, and announced that she plans to establish a Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council.

“I also look forward to dedicating our Veterans Cemetery in the Great Park, at the Golf Course site, as we have full funding to create a final resting place for our veterans,” she said. “To support this effort, in the coming months, it is my goal to create a Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council, inclusive of all military branches.”

She also spoke to the unmatched quality of life in Irvine, highlighting the City’s reputation as one of the nation’s safest communities, the City Council’s continued support of Irvine’s public schools, and the vibrant business community.
