 The City of Irvine’s Emergency Advisory Radio System is now more powerful. The City has upgraded its system to better provide effective communications to residents. In case of emergency, tune to 1640 AM on your radio to learn about road closures and other emergency information in situations such as earthquakes, fires, power outages or other disasters.
"Just this past year Public Safety improved the power and effectiveness of the 1640 AM emergency radio transmitter creating better reception and coverage," said Irvine Police Lieutenant Bob Richardson. "This allows Public Safety personnel to provide real-time emergency information to the community across Irvine 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
The 1640 AM transmitter, can be updated by Public Safety personnel from any remote location by telephone. Its transmitter/digital voice recorder is capable of recording and playing messages for 14 minutes before repeating, and has 72 hours of back-up battery power in case of power failure.
Select Public Safety staff and members of the Irvine Disaster Emergency Communications (IDEC) team, which is a valuable component of the City’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, are also trained to use the system.
