2011 Special Olympics Torch Run Underway
On Thursday, June 2, 2011, members of the Irvine Police Department “carried the torch” to draw attention to the Special Olympics. Twenty-four runners and support personnel took the hand off at Harvard Avenue and University Drive from the University of California, Irvine Police Department. Taking turns, the runners carried the torch north, 4 miles, including a loop through the Irvine Civic Center, to Harvard Drive and Edinger Avenue where they handed off to members of the Tustin Police Department.
The torch run began near the California border with Mexico in Chula Vista. Hundreds of law enforcement professionals will carry the torch through Southern California before it reaches its final destination, in Long Beach at the Special Olympics opening ceremonies on June 11th.
Irvine’s officers will also be supporting the Special Olympics on Thursday June 9th at 5:00 PM when they partner with three local restaurants, Javier’s Cantina & Grill, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Ruby’s Diner for the “tip-a-Cop” event at the Irvine Spectrum.
