IRVINE, CA (February 9, 2015): A longtime animal advocate, public-private expert as well as UCLA professor, James R. Greenwood, has been hired in an interim position to bring an experienced focus to the Irvine Animal Care Center – a focus that underscores his experience dating back to his first degree from 1967, in zoology.
Greenwood, who demonstrates a “passion for animals,” is known for his transparent and inclusive style in both the boardroom and the classroom. He will oversee the Center for approximately three months while a nationwide recruitment for a permanent manager is sought and selected by the City of Irvine.
Greenwood will be formally introduced to the City Council during the Council meeting Tuesday, February 10; he will be available for media interviews immediately after his introduction at the Irvine Civic Center and the conclusion of the agenda item, 4.1. Greenwood will meet with staff and volunteers from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday at the Irvine Animal Care Center.
He is known for developing blueprints for success during his career, which includes serving as Deputy Director, Public Health, Disease Control and Prevention for the County of Orange (1991-94) with oversight of animal issues. He has been an assistant vice chancellor at UCLA as well as, most recently, director for California-based MuniFed Energy.
While at UCLA, he worked with and supported the campus feral cat program.
Greenwood has worked with community groups and volunteers during his varied career.
Besides his bachelor’s degree in zoology, Greenwood has master’s degrees in microbiology and epidemiology and a doctorate from UCLA in microbiology.
