The annexation of the former El Toro Marine Base, as well as land in the "Northern Sphere" has created a city of almost 79 square miles, the largest land mass city in Orange County and third most populated city behind Santa Ana and Anaheim. As the City continues to grow, the outstanding men and women of the Irvine Police Department are prepared to grow and adapt with it. As the short history of the Department shows, the Irvine Police Department is constantly adapting to meet the challenges of policing a growing, progressive population. | | | Irvine is America's Safest City for Jurisdictions with a population over 100,000 for the seventh consecutive year. Based on data releasesd by the FBI, Irvine reported less violent crime per capita than any other big city in the nation. The data confirms Irvine to have the lowest violent crime rate for Part I crime with reductions in every major category from the previous year. Property crime which includes burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft was down by 2.8% nationally while it decreased 6.7% in Irvine. Arson decreased in Irvine by 21% and only 8.3% across the nation.
