Sobriety / Driver's License Checkpoint

Irvine Center Drive at Tesla    August 25, 2000

The Irvine Police Traffic Bureau conducted a sobriety / driver's license checkpoint during the evening hours on Friday, August 25, 2000. The checkpoint was located on Irvine Center Drive east of Bake Parkway. The purpose of the checkpoint was to deter the impaired driver through publicity surrounding the event, and by the highly visible presence of sworn officers at the location of the checkpoint. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) estimates that communities, which consistently use sobriety checkpoints, experience as much as 8 times the reduction in DUI incidence as communities, which use roving patrols alone. Checkpoints have been highly effective in educating the public to the hazards of impaired driving. According to MADD, in one survey 79% of the public approved of sobriety checkpoints.

The Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), State of California, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have given support for this project. The Irvine Police Department currently has two officers assigned full time to a DUI enforcement team, which is partially funded by a grant from OTS.

This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint was our second checkpoint this year. The checkpoint was staffed by:

In addition, Lakeside Tow Company provided tow trucks on scene and delineation was provided by Public Works. This was a very successful public relations event, providing education and deterrence to those who passed through or by the checkpoint. We received positive comments from motorists contacted by our officers.
