Irvine Crime Free Self Storage Program

Irvine is currently the only city in California offering a Crime Free Certification Program for self storage managers and facilities. The goal of the Crime Free Self Storage Program is to keep criminals out and fill storage facilities with 100% legitimate, law-abiding citizens. Being a certified member of this program does not guarantee that a property will be free from crime. However, managers and facilities participating in this program adopt a “Crime Free” environment policy and must meet a rigorous set of security and crime prevention standards to become certified. Facilities participating in this program typically enjoy a significantly reduced potential for crime and victimization. The Irvine Crime Free Self Storage Program consists of three phases before certification can be obtained. Phase 1 – Managers must attend a 4 hour training session to learn how to maintain a safe environment for the facility, staff, renters, and their property through diligent attention to proven security and prevention practices, including liability mitigation. Phase 2 - Facilities must pass a security inspection conducted by Irvine Police Department personnel and must meet the minimum security standards of the Crime Free program to qualify. Security Standards Mandatory Disc Locks Only Facility – facilities convert to disk or cylinder lock only (see More Information for details). Access Control – facilities implement physical and procedural security practices to effectively control access to the properties - post appropriate signage restricting access to legitimate users only, electronic surveillance equipment must be well placed and maintained, file storage secured, gates monitored, hours restricted, etc. Effective Screening Practices - facilities utilize a Crime Free Lease Addendum whereby renters agree to participate in the crime free program while on or near the property and in signing, acknowledge that they are aware the property is open to law enforcement for use as a training facility for K9 or SWAT teams after hours. Inventory List- forms are provided to the renter so that in the event of loss or damage, information is recorded for insurance purposes or a police report. Emergency Contacts List- are required as back up in case of emergency when the renter is unavailable. Phase 3 – Managers must post their properties with the Irvine Crime Free Self Storage Program sign and maintain certification by attending annual update training and security inspections.
