Concrete Maintenance Program

John Dupont, Street Maintenance Supervisor

The Concrete Maintenance Program inspects, schedules, and repairs displaced or damaged concrete sidewalks, curb and gutter within the city right-of-way. This Program is intended to prevent trip and fall incidents due to the deterioration of aging sidewalks, aprons, and access ramps. Curb and gutters are also inspected and repaired as part of the program to ensure proper water flow to the storm drain system.

Displaced or damaged concrete may be temporarily repaired to remove an immediate trip hazard. Trip hazards are repaired by grinding at the area lifted. If a sidewalk or apron has too high of a vertical displacement (usually above 1.5 inches) it will be temporarily ramped with a concrete patch. After an area is temporarily repaired it is scheduled for replacement on a project list in the order it was received. Requests for removal and replacement are generally completed within 30 to 60 days.

Pavement Maintenance Program

Ralph Vargas, Street Maintenance Supervisor

The Pavement Maintenance Program inspects, schedules, and repairs an inventory of more than 1700 lane miles of roadways, 43 miles of bike trails, and 53 acres of parking lot surfaces within the City of Irvine. The goal of the program is to maintain and enhance the physical environment while promoting a safe a secure pavement system for the community.Maintenance repairs include pot hole patching, dig-out repairs, overlays, crack seals, chip seals and slurry seals.

The City of Irvine is currently operating on a seven-year cycle for slurry seal of all public streets in the City.

Public Drainage Program

Joe Dillman, Street Maintenance Supervisor

The Public Drainage Program is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of City public drainage facilities.Program responsibilities include:

*Annual inspection and cleaning of all City storm drains and catch basins.

*Erosion control of slopes along City open channels and other City drainage facilities.

*Cleaning of debris and clearance of drainage systems after storm events.

*Prevention of standing water issues/concerns in City right-of-way areas.

Even if you live miles from the Pacific Ocean, you may be polluting the ocean without knowing it.Unlike the sewer system, which carries water from your indoor drains to wastewater treatment plants, the storm drain system in Irvine releases untreated water into flood control channels, creeks and ultimately the ocean.

To ensure the safety and enjoyment of our environment, everyone's help is needed to keep the storm drain system free from harmful pollutants. Please visit the Citys Water Quality page for additional information on things you can do to protect the water in your storm drain system.
