Why should early childhood programs be concerned about the flu? Children under the age of 5 are at higher risk for complications from flu, and severe flu complications are most common in children younger than 2 years old. Infants younger than 6 months old are a particularly vulnerable group because they are too young to get the seasonal flu or 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine.
What steps can early childhood programs take to keep children and program staff healthy? Encourage all early childhood program staff to get vaccinated for seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 flu according to CDC recommendations when vaccines become available.
