Winners of Solar Decathlon contests announced October 10, 11 & 12 Sun sets on international event Sunday, October 13 at 7 p.m.

IRVINE, CA (October 7, 2013): The final weekend of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO promises to be the best yet as the winners of the international collegiate competition are announced and cooler temperatures arrive at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif.
At Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO, children and adults alike will learn ways to save money by saving energy while touring the 19 student-built, highly efficient solar-powered houses, and explore the XPO – a 21st century festival of creativity, technology, design, and education.
The Solar Decathlon consists of 10 contests. Each contest is worth a maximum of 100 points, for a potential total of 1,000 points. The winner is the team with the most points at the end of the competition. Five of the 10 contests are juried by a panel of independent experts. The winners of each of the juried contests will be announced on site at Solar Decathlon 2013 beginning this Thursday, October 10.
Schedule of contest winner announcements:
· Thursday, October 10 at 10 a.m. – Market Appeal and Affordability contest winners announced
· Friday, October 11 at 10 a.m. – Architecture and Communications contest winners announced
· Saturday, October 12 at 10 a.m. – Engineering contest and overall Solar Decathlon 2013 winners announced
The other five contests are measured over the course of the competition. The scores and standings based on these five contests can be monitored in real time on the Solar Decathlon website.

Visitors to the Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO are encouraged to consider taking public transportation options available through Metrolink and local shuttles. If driving to the event, please exit Jeffrey Road and follow traffic signage to event parking.

About Solar Decathlon 2013
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate energy-efficient houses powered by the sun. These teams spend two years creating houses to compete in 10 contests. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.
The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002; the competition has since occurred biennially in 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011. The next event will take place from October 3 through October 13, 2013, at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California. The competition houses will be open to visitors free of charge on eight days over two weekends.
