IRVINE, CA (April 23, 2013):  Edison International has announced its involvement as sustaining sponsor for the upcoming U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO.

Edison International will provide $250,000. The Rosemead-based generator and distributor of electric power is the parent company of Southern California Edison – serving Irvine as one of the nation’s largest electric utilities.

“This is a welcome sponsorship to one of the biggest events in Irvine’s history,” said Irvine Mayor Steven S. Choi. “As the host city, we know that you cannot have a conversation about energy without participation from Edison International. The company, which is leading California in alternative energy solutions for tomorrow, is a perfect fit for the Solar Decathlon of today.”

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO, a free public event, is being held October 3-6 and October 10-13 for the first time outside of Washington, D.C. The international competition at the Orange County Great Park will involve as many as 800 students from 20 collegiate teams who build energy efficient, solar houses.

“Edison International is a proud partner of the City of Irvine, and the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO,” said Gaddi Vasquez, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for Edison International. "Through this partnership, Edison is supporting the innovation and imagination of collegiate teams by encouraging them to build solar efficient homes that blend design excellence with energy efficiency. Since 2009, Edison International has given more than $34 million to education programs that help students excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.” Edison International’s support of charitable causes is entirely funded by shareholders. Southern California Edison customers do not pay for donations in their utility bills.

The free public event at the Great Park will have two complementary components – the Solar Village where the houses will be open for tours, and the XPO, a clean, renewable and efficient energy exposition featuring visionary and innovative companies, products and educational opportunities. Through fun, interactive exhibits and activities, the XPO will provide visitors with information about the broad spectrum of energy efficiency in home design, transportation, consumer products, food production and education.
