IRVINE, CA (April 9, 2013):  On Saturday, April 27, 2013, the Irvine Police Department will be participating in the  U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.  This year, Irvine Police and the DEA will support two collection sites.  One at the Irvine Civic Center, One Civic Center Plaza, Irvine, 92614 and the other hosted by Kaiser Permanente - Irvine Medical Center at 6670 Alton Parkway (near the Alton/Sand Canyon Medical Office Building #1). Collection hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Community members may drive up and drop off their medications free and anonymously during those hours.

By joining in this national effort, the Irvine Police Department will give the community an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted medications. Typically, the Irvine site will collect more than 200 pounds of prescription drugs and other medications contributing as one of more than 3000 collection sites operated by local law enforcement agencies nationwide.

The Irvine Police Department urges residents to bring expired or unneeded medicines to the collection site, eliminating the potential for diversion, misuse, abuse, or even accidental poisoning. Additionally, the improper disposal of medications such as flushing them down a toilet or throwing them in the trash pose public safety, health, and environmental hazards.

Community members with questions regarding this event may contact Sergeant Matt August at (949) 724-7023.

Additional information regarding the DEA’s national campaign, including other local collection sites, is available at:
