IRVINE, CA (July 27, 2012): The Irvine Police are investigating an early morning single vehicle traffic collision that left the driver dead.

At 12:40 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2012, Irvine Police officers and Orange County Fire Authority personnel responded to a single vehicle collision on Irvine Center Drive just north of Hubble.  When officers arrived on scene, they discovered the driver was deceased. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

The preliminary investigation indicated the vehicle was northbound on Irvine Center Drive when it proceeded through the intersection at Hubble.  The vehicle continued straight through the intersection and struck traffic signal pole on the corner, knocking it down.  The Major Accident Investigation Team is currently investigating the cause of this collision.

All northbound lanes of Irvine Center Drive are currently closed between Bake Parkway and Research, and will remain closed until approximately 11:00 a.m., while repairs are made to the signal pole.  City of Irvine Public Works personnel responded with cones, signs and other traffic control devices in order to facilitate the flow of traffic. Additionally, police personnel have been assigned to the area to assist with traffic flow.  A Sig Alert has been issued and the Orange County Transportation Authority has been notified.  As of 7:15 a.m., traffic was light.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to contact Detective Jonathan Cherney at (949) 724-7024.

Driver:

John Hwan Kim, 41 years old

Resident of Laguna Woods
