IRVINE, CA (June 14, 2012):  The Irvine Police Department’s D.A.R.E unit will celebrate its 25th anniversary on June 16, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., in Bill Barber Park.  The park is located at 4 Civic Center Plaza next to the Irvine Civic Center.

This free family event will feature bounce houses, field games led by D.A.R.E. Officers, and police and fire vehicles.  There will also be BBQ, refreshments and treats for sale.  The event will provide an opportunity for kids, parents and members of the community to meet and greet current and former Irvine Police D.A.R.E. officers and other members of the department.

“The D.A.R.E. program is an investment we make that builds relationships and trust with our community’s youth that continue to pay dividends, long into their adult lives.” Chief David Maggard remarked.  “Over the past ten years, it is impossible to count the number of times I have been approached by a community member that felt compelled to express their appreciation, and often to share a story, of how a particular officer they first met in their elementary school classroom made a positive impact on their life.”

Mayor Sukhee Kang will offer a welcome to attendees and the movie, “Dolphin Tale”, will begin at dusk. Don’t forget to bring your own blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the movie under the stars.
