IRVINE, CA (November 5, 2009):  Shortly after 1:00 p.m. Irvine Police were summoned to assist Orange County Sheriff's deputies in an apartment community in the 400 block of Hayes in the City of Irvine.  Information was that deputies were at the location to conduct an eviction notification when a single gunshot was heard inside the apartment where deputies were attempting to contact the occupant.

Irvine Police crisis negotiators responded and attempted to establish communication with the apartment occupant, but the subject did not respond.  The Irvine Police SWAT team was deployed and methodically checked the location.  After deploying teargas and systematically searching the apartment the SWAT team found the resident deceased inside.  According to the preliminary investigation, the man had evidently sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As a precaution, surrounding apartments were evacuated during the police response.  Those residents were temporarily relocated to an area community center and returned to their homes at the event's conclusion.

The 44-year-old man involved in this event was the resident of the apartment where deputies were originally attempting to make contact.  The man's identity is being withheld pending family notification.
