IRVINE, CA (August 21, 2009):  Irvine Police are investigating a late night traffic collision that has left two dead and three hospitalized.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Thursday August 20, 2009 Irvine police officers responded to a traffic collision on Shady Canyon, east of Sunny Hill.  Upon their arrival, officers found that a vehicle had been involved in a collision just outside the gated community at that location.  Emergency medical personnel immediately attended to the vehicle occupants and transported four of them to area hospitals.  One of those subjects, who had been a passenger in the vehicle, passed away at the hospital.  A fifth occupant, who had also been a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that this was a single vehicle collision, with the involved vehicle colliding with a wall near the guard shack just outside the gated community.  The involved vehicle was a 1993 Honda.  The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.

The identities of the deceased are being withheld, pending notification to next of kin.

Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to contact Traffic Officer Matt August at (949) 724-7023.
