IRVINE, CA (January 4, 2014):  Today, the Irvine Police Department arrested 42-year-old Huntington Beach resident Alexie Rodriguez after he was caught stealing from a vehicle that was parked at a fitness center.

At 6:30 p.m. Irvine Police Officers responded to the call of a theft from a vehicle that had been parked at the 24 Hour Fitness, located at 18007 Von Karman. Officers quickly arrived on scene and met with the 67 year old male victim. Officer learned that the victim had just finished working out at the gym and returned to his van, which was parked on the second floor of the parking structure for the 24 Hour Fitness.

The victim said that after he started his van and drove from his parking space he noticed Rodriguez, who was attempting to hide, lying down in the back seat. The victim challenged Rodriguez, who then quickly exited the van and fled from the area on foot, taking the victim’s wallet, forty dollars cash, a cell phone and two watches, with him.

The victim followed the suspect as he fled, observing him run into a parking structure located at 2251 Dupont, which is several blocks from the initial crime location.

Officers quickly arrived on scene and set up a perimeter around the parking structure. A team of officers, including K9 Officer Shirley Sumner and her K9 partner “Rudy”, began a search of the parking structure. As the team searched the second floor K9 Rudy located the suspect attempting to hide behind a concrete pillar. Rodriguez was ordered to surrender and was taken into custody without injury to the suspect or officers.

Officers conducted a thorough search of the parking structure and located the property stolen from the initial victim, as well as property from an unreported theft from an unlocked vehicle earlier that day.

Rodriguez was later transported to the Orange County Jail and booked on charges of grand theft, and use of a controlled substance.
