How can I advertise in the Irvine Newsletter?
The Irvine Newsletter is produced bimonthly by Irvine Senior Services and is tailored to adults age 50 and older residing in Irvine. Advertising in the Irvine Newsletter is a unique opportunity to reach out to a growing audience that is as diverse in their activities as they are in their cultural background. Do you offer any assistance programs?
A variety of free consulting programs are available for older adults. Meet one-on-one with trained professionals. For more information or to make an appointment, please call the Keen Family Center for Senior Resources at 949-724-6926.

How can I use the computer lab?

Lakeview Senior Center has a computer lab for adults ages 50 and older. To become a member, visit the Lakeview Senior Center to:
- Complete Program Registration Form
- Pay your year membership dues ($17 for Irvine residents /$22 for non residents)
- Sign Computer Lab Rules and Regulations
- Receive personal login information

How can I donate to Senior Services?
You may donate in person at the Lakeview or Rancho Senior Centers or online at
irvinegives.org. Your donation (financial, in-kind or volunteer service) can help provide food, friendship and other critical services that allow seniors to remain healthy and safe. How can I become an entertainer for Senior Services?
Irvine Senior Services books entertainment for select events throughout the year. Interested performers must submit the appropriate proposal (paid or volunteer) to
edesselle@cityofirvine.org. All potential performers are placed on an interest list and will be contacted if services are needed.

Does Seniors Services offer any excursions?
Senior Services offers a variety of day excursions throughout the year. For a list of upcoming trips, call the Lakeview or Rancho Senior Center. Irvine Senior Travelers coordinates a variety of day and extended trips to meet the needs of senior travelers. For a listing of trips, call 888-882-8714 or visit the

How can I become an exhibitor/vendor at one of your special events?
Senior Services offers two signature events per year which showcase exhibitors. The Senior Health and Resource Expo (fall) and the Senior Fitness Expo (spring) each draw large attendance numbers averaging over 300 people, and provide resources to the Irvine senior community. If you would like to be added to the interest list for either of these events, call the Senior Services Special Event line at 949- 724-6908.


How can I use the fitness center?
The Rancho Fitness Center is committed to its goal of providing seniors with a safe and comfortable workout environment. The center is designed for adults age 50 and older, and features a selection of cardiovascular and strength training equipment. To become a member, visit the Rancho Senior Center to:
1. Attend an orientation (schedule your orientation in-person at the Rancho Senior Center)
2. Finalize all memberships forms and register

How can I become a Health and Education presenter?
Health and Education presentations are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-noon at the Lakeview Senior Center. Our average attendance is 30 participants. If you are interested in being a presenter, please complete the
Health and Education Program Proposal. Be sure to complete both sides of the proposal and be as detailed as possible, this will help in the review process. Completed proposals can be emailed to edesselle@cityofirvine.org. Once your proposal has been received, you will be sent an email confirmation with further instructions.

How can I become an instructor?
Whether it’s a volunteer instructor or a paid instructor that you are interested in becoming, we want to hear from you! Please fill out the
Program Proposal for your program and we will get back to you in a timely manner. It is important to give as much detail as possible on your proposal including any and all credentials to be an instructor. At this time, contract instructor applications are not available on the city website. We ask that you fill out the proposal below and return it via:

If the program you are offering does not fit the needs of our senior community or our strategic plan, we will file your proposal and hold for one year. If the need for your program arises, we will then access your filed application.

No. Some programs may require an additional non-resident fee.


How do I register for Irvine Valley College classes offered at Senior Services?
Online Registration Procedures:
1. Go to www.123GetSmart.com
2. Click on the link to the left column for Emeritus
3. Select Class Category (e.g., Fitness) in the blue column on the left.
- Class sections are on the right in alphabetical order (click on the class you want).
- Or you can enter the four-digit activity number from this brochure in the activity search box.
4. Click on the Class Course Number for the section you want.
5. Click the “Add” button.
6. RETURNING STUDENTS ONLY: Enter your account number and PIN.
- If you need this information re-sent to you, please call 949/451-5555.
- Or e-mail your request to ivccommunityed@ivc.edu.
NEW STUDENTS ONLY: Proceed to click on “Create New Account.” (Your previous IVC Student Number and Pin Number do not work on this system.)
- Fill in all of your personal contact information.
7. The class will now be added. You can select under the “Client” column whom you would like registered in the course.

Does the senior center serve lunch/meals?
The Rose Garden Cafe, located at the Lakeview Senior Center, serves lunch Monday-Friday. Come enjoy nutritious, delicious entrees served to you at the table by our wonderful volunteers. You are not only receiving a meal at the Rose Garden Cafe but great service in a social atmosphere. For more information, call 949-724-6900 or visit our website at

Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

How do I register for Irvine Meals on Wheels?
Irvine Meals on Wheels Services are partially funded by the "Older Americans Act." Services are provided on a donation basis, no qualifying homebound senior is turned away due to inability to donate. Suggested donation of $5 per day for three meals. In order to be eligible for the Irvine Meals on Wheels program, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Irvine Resident
- 60 years of age or older
- Homebound and those living alone or at highest acuity receive highest priority
- Unable to prepare nutritious meals or obtain meals from another source
- Able to accept meals between 11:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays
- Must have completed assessment performed by Irvine Meals on Wheels staff or volunteer

What is OLLI?
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at University California, Irvine (UCI) is a dynamic group of seasoned adults–both retired and semi-retired–who enjoy literature, history, science, the arts and travel. The Al and Dorothy Keen Center for Senior Resources, located in the lobby at Lakeview Senior Center, has information about a wide range of services and programs. There are five easy ways to register for a class:

Do you offer scholarships to help pay for programs?
The City of Irvine offers a scholarship program to help low-income Irvine residents participate in programs offered through the Community Services Department. The program has limited funds available. Scholarships are granted on a first-come basis after applications are reviewed and approved. The program may be closed to new applications when funds run low.
In order to submit an application, the following must be provided:
- Proof of Irvine residency (most recent original gas or electric bill, less than 30 days old). No water bills, cable bills, phone bills or school lunch letters will be accepted. No photo copies or computer print out of gas or electric bill will be accepted;
- A copy of your entire federal tax return for the most recent tax year. Only those individuals included on the tax return are eligible to apply for scholarship funds; (a tax transcript is not applicable.);
- A copy of the two most recent employment check stubs, less than 30 days old and for each working adult listed on the tax return;
- A copy of the W-2 from each working adult listed on the tax return. If self-employed, please provide 1099;
- A copy of proof of any other income/support received. Please provide most recent award letter indicating monthly disbursement for child support, alimony, cash assistance, Social Security, disability, food assistance, child care assistance, etc.:
- If you are unemployed, please provide the most recent unemployment benefit letter indicating your weekly unemployment benefits.

PLEASE NOTE: Without the above information, your application may be denied.

What is the Senior Services Strategic Plan?
Community input used in the development of the Senior Plan was gathered from over 600 community members through five task forces, an advisory committee, town hall meetings, a community survey and the Irvine Senior Citizens Council. The primary goals of the Senior Services Strategic Plan are to identify and support policies and practices that strengthen the emotional, cognitive, physical and social health of the City’s older adults. The Senior Plan provides the City with a vision, set of strategies and an Implementation Matrix to address five priority focus areas between 2012 and 2017. The Irvine City Council adopted the Senior Plan on May 8, 2012.

Five priority areas are identified as the focus of the Plan, and include:
- Education (including, financial, insurance, employment and advocacy);
- Housing;
- Mental and Physical Health; and
- Recreation and Leisure; and
- Transportation.

How can I become a Senior Services volunteer?
The first step to becoming a Senior Services volunteer is to attend a Volunteer Informational Meeting. At the meeting, you will learn about the many volunteer opportunities available at the Lakeview and Rancho Senior Centers. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. or 5 p.m. at the Lakeview Senior Center. To register, turn in your completed

Support groups are designed to help you deal with physical, emotional and/or care-giving demands that may overtax your coping abilities. Does the Senior Center offer transportation?
The City of Irvine TRIPS program provides a low‐cost, door‐to‐door, wheelchair accessible transportation service to qualified Irvine residents age 18 and older who are unable to drive due to a permanent physical or cognitive disability. Through community mobilization, information and referral, the TRIPS program encourages independence, personal competency and community involvement and is committed to enhancing the quality of life of those individuals who require specialized transportation services. Service is provided Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with some weekend availability.
