3 things you need to know about the Affordable Care Act

These three tips can help you get educated about the basics.

  1. Health Coverage is Available Now
    Covered California, our state's health insurance marketplace, helps you calculate if you qualify for Medi-Cal or a health plan through private insurance. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Visit Coveredca.com
  2. Health Care Coverage is Required
    Starting January 1, 2014, most Californians will be required to have health care coverage or pay a fee.
    • In 2014, not having insurance will cost you $95 or 1 percent of your annual income - whichever is greater. ln 2016, the fee will increase to $695 or 2.5 percent of your annual income - Again, whichever is greater
    • Not everyone will be required to have health care coverage. Some exemptions exist. Click here to find out more.

Health Care Coverage Options

  • Covered California
    The State's health insurance marketplace offers Californians health plans through private insurance, and potential financial help to cover premiums for those who are eligible. Open enrollment is October 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014, with coverage beginning January 1, 2014.
  • Medi-Cal
    Medi-Cal helps pay for a wide variety of medical services for children, seniors and disabled individuals with low incomes. This program is expanding to cover more Californians, including single adults between the ages of 19-64 without dependent children.

Presented by the City of Irvine in partnership with Catholic Charities of Orange County and the Children's Health Initiative of Orange County, this free community forum is designed to educate individuals and families about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), provide an overview of the Health Care Exchange and how to enroll and answer questions about the recent changes in health care coverage.  

Certified Enrollment Counselors (CECs) will be available to answer questions and schedule appointments to assist with enrollment. For more information, call 949-724-6680.
