Open Space & Nature Programs

Mission
Statement

The City of Irvine is dedicated to creating and promoting an awareness of our natural community, while encouraging behaviors that will ensure the preservation of our open space wilderness for generations to come. By engaging members of the community in positive outdoor recreational and educational experiences, we will manage and maintain Irvine’s open space preserve as a welcoming and valued part of our City.

The Open Space Preserve is made up of a mosaic of habitats including wetlands, oak woodlands, and coastal sage scrub, and houses some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world.  This scenic land provides both preservation of critically important plans and wildlife, as well as an area for recreation and respite.

The Irvine Open Space Preserve is an extremely valuable part of the City's open space system planned to be a network of parks and preserves connected by a trail system for cyclists, hikers and equestrians.
The priority for this land is habitat preservation and recreation including, hiking trails, camping and passive recreation. This land, encompassing approximately 4,000 acres, is also contiguous with a larger regional system of open space that includes Crystal Cove State Park, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, and Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.
