The 2010 Census:  it’s easy, it’s important, it’s safe, and everyone counts!

What is the U.S. Census?

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years.

Why is the U.S. Census important?

Every year, the federal government distributes more than $400 billion to state, local and tribal governments based on Census data. An accurate Census count is important to the City of Irvine, as the data directly affects how much federal and state funding is allocated to communities for neighborhood improvements, public health, education, transportation and much more. That equates to more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period.

Census data is also used to reapportion the U.S. House of Representatives, re-district each state and determine the distribution of the Electoral College. In addition to determining political representation, the 2010 Census will play a critical role in:

  • Determining where funding is needed to enhance important community initiatives and programs;
  • Assessing needs and plans for schools, road and transit improvement and construction, health care facilities, disaster response and evacuation, recreational facilities, and a host of other community services;
  • Aiding the City in grant writing, and helping us to target our services and ensure maximum benefit to those we serve; and
  • Assisting businesses in determining where they will locate, hire and invest.

How will the City of Irvine help to ensure a complete and accurate count of the 2010 Census?

The City of Irvine has partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau to support the 2010 Census and the effort to achieve a complete and accurate count of Irvine's growing population. By forming the Irvine Complete Count Committee, our support of the 2010 Census reinforces the City's commitment to help improve the quality of life in Irvine and impacts programs such as youth and family services, senior services, maintenance operations, public safety, and parks and recreation.
