Irvine's Green Building section has been updated, please click here to visit the new page

Since its founding in 1971, the City of Irvine has been a model of thoughtful, self-sustaining community planning. Here in Irvine, the ambitious dream of meeting human needs is undertaken with an equally passionate commitment to nurturing and protecting the community’s physical environment. The merging of these efforts has produced exceptional and widely praised results.

WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING?

Green or sustainable building is creating environmentally sensitive, energy conscious and healthier homes for families. Green building can include:

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

WATER CONSERVATION AND REDUCTION OF RUNOFF

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY BUILDING MATERIALS AND SPECIFICATIONS

WASTE REDUCTION

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

SMART GROWTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

WHY BUILD GREEN?

QUALITY OF LIFE

Improving our living space through reduced indoor air pollution, smarter designs, and improving environmental conditions for future generations

ECONOMY

Saving money and increasing property values through more durable building designs and reduced lifecycle costs

ENVIRONMENT

Reducing our impact on the environment through smarter use of limited resources and land

HOW TO BUILD GREEN

The Irvine Green Building Program has developed criteria for building or remodeling homes to become “Green Certified.” Specifica charts define the items to consider when building green. To qualify as a Green Building, the structure must score at least 50 points and include the eight required items (see asterisked items in the scoring chart).

The City has developed 3 specific programs for new construction:
