Code Information

The City of Irvine enforces the following codes: key amendments are included. For code adoption and complete amendments, see Title 5, Division 9, Chapters 1,2 and 3 at Municipal Code.

2007 California Building Codes (Vol. 1 & 2) with City Amendments

Key Amendments:
1. High-rise building provisions are required for buildings 55 feet or higher from grade.
2. All apartments or condominiums are required to be provided with fire sprinkler systems.
3. Buildings located in identified very high fire severity zones require special provisions identified in our building code.
4. Wood roofs shall have a Class A for new, re-roof, and additions.
5. City Security Code Municipal Code (see Title 5, Division 9, Chapter 5)

2007 California Electrical Code (Based on the 2002 National Electrical Code) is now in effect and is
applicable for all projects submitted after August 1, 2005. The 2001California Electrical Code will continue to be enforced for projects applied for prior
to this date.
Key Amendments:

1.    Special provisions restricting use of aluminum wiring.
2 Special provisions prohibiting the use of overhead wiring

2007 California Plumbing Code
Key Amendments:

1.   Regenerating self contained water softeners are prohibited.
2.   Galvanized malleable iron, galvanized wrought iron, or galvanized steel are prohibited materials for underground water piping.
3. Underground gas piping shall be approved polyethylene or other approved non-metallic material.

The City of Irvine publishes an Informational Bulletin that documents our Code interpretations and policies.
