About the Irvine Friendship Cities Program

The City of Irvine is a diverse community with an international reputation. As such, community interest exists in creating ways to establish relationships with international cities through communication and the sharing of information. The Friendship City Program provides the City of Irvine an additional opportunity to initiate relationships – on a municipal government-to-municipal government basis – as an instrument to promote Irvine’s future international relations. This program allows the City to form flexible ties with our counterparts in other cities.

Designed to create an atmosphere of goodwill, friendship city relationships may include the exchange of correspondence between mayors, members of the city council, and other community leaders regarding areas of mutual interest. While funding limitations may preclude travel or more formal program activities, the Friendship City Program provides the opportunity to initiate city-to-city communication exchanges.

How Friendship City Relationships are formed

The Friendship City program is coordinated and managed by the City of Irvine’s Multicultural Affairs Office. Multicultural organizations and Irvine residents are encouraged to bring forward Friendship City proposals for City Council consideration. Any proposed agreement must be sponsored and recommended by a member of the City Council, and subsequently approved by the City Council prior to enactment and signing of the agreements.
